 Geomudo Island
 Island of the Month,
Geumodo Island earned its nickname, Geomudo
 You’ll Want to Know
(Black Island), because its dense forests of dark pine
trees made it appear pitch-black from afar. This island
was a treasure of the Joseon Dynasty, providing
timber essential for royal court construction.
Geumodo was designated as a Royal Wood Factory,
with its forests strictly protected to ensure a steady
 supply of high-quality wood.
 The Korea Island Development Institute
(KIDI), in partnership with the Ministry of
the Interior and Safety, selects an Island
of the Month to spotlight and celebrate
Korea’s rich island heritage. Chosen by a
selection committee of island experts and
 representatives from 36 local governments
with islands, the featured island becomes
the centerpiece of activities like the On-Site
Forum, KIDI Academy Field Trip, and the
Island Trail Project. These stories showcase
Vol.01 the unique history, culture, and beauty of

 Korea’s islands.
