Exploring Strategies to Revitalize Island Tourism Along the Southern Coast

Daegaya Hall, ① Forum Held in Rotation Across Provincial Governments
- This session was part of a series of rotating forums held in celebration of KIDI’s
Gyeongnam Research Inst.
founding. It focused on practical, on-site policy discussions relevant to island
communities.
➁ Joint Hosting with Gyeongnam Research Institute Based on Prior MOU
- The forum was co-hosted by KIDI and the Gyeongnam Research Institute as a follow-
up to the MOU signed between KIDI and Gyeongsangnam-do Province in December
2022, strengthening cooperation in island research and policy development.
➂ Diverse Participation Across Regions and Sectors
- The event brought together a wide range of participants, including island residents,
civil society groups, academics, and representatives from both metropolitan and
local governments (Gyeongnam Province, Jeonnam Province, and island-holding
municipalities), as well as major research institutions such as Gyeongnam Research
Institute, Jeonnam Research Institute, Busan Research Institute, Korea Maritime
Institute, and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology.

① An International Forum Held Aboard a Research Vessel
- Aboard the Hanbada, this unique setting marked the beginning of a “New Global
Governance” initiative. It featured collaborative policy dialogue among takeholders
from Korea, China, Japan, broader Asia, and the Mediterraneanregion. The forum
proposed new international island policy agendas.
➁ Engagement from Europe and the Pacific
- Representatives from European countries including Greece and Denmark, along with
participants from Pacific island nations, took part in discussions.
➂ Special Session in Celebration of the 4th Island Day
– Focus on Ulleungdo
- A dedicated session on Ulleungdo addressed the island’s healthcare system, the
opening of Ulleung Airport, future development prospects, and strategies to boost
marine tourism around Ulleungdo and Dokdo. The session included public officials,
scholars, and island residents.
➃ Crafting Future-Oriented Strategies
- The forum emphasized sustainable strategies that meet the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs—a key
14 principle in ensuring the long-term vitality of island communities. 15
