The Korea Island Forum

The Korea Island Development Institute (KIDI) hosts the Korea Island

Forum as a recurring platform to develop global island agendas. The
Forum serves as an international venue for sharing academic insights,
policy case studies, and legislative improvements related to island

governance. Let’s take a look back at the key highlights from the 4th,
5th, and 6th Korea Island Forums held in 2023.

Key Highlights

① Legislative and Executive Bodies Joined in Dialogue
- The forum brought together key players from both the legislative and
executive branches, including national lawmakers representing island regions
and officials from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of
Oceans and Fisheries.

➁ Joint Hosting by Legislative Research Bodies and Policy Institutes
- The event was co-hosted by the National Assembly Island Development Study
Group, the National Assembly Futures Institute, and the Korea Maritime Institute.
This collaborative effort emphasized the importance of addressing population
cline in island regions through national balanced development strategies.

➂ Legal and Policy Reform for Island Communities
- Discussions highlighted the urgent need to amend loopholes in existing laws
and to establish new policies and long-term development plans to better
respond to on the ground challenges in island areas.
