                                                                                                                                                                    Before arriving, I assumed Yokjido was just another of the many
                                                                                                                                                                    islands dotting the South Sea. But once there, I was stunned by its
                                                                                                                                                                    breathtaking landscapes, vibrant local food, and countless things
                                                                                                                                                                    to see. The ferry ride from Samdeok Port built anticipation as the
                                                                                                                                                                    shimmering ocean and scattered islands unfolded around us.

                                                                                                                                                                    What awaited us onshore was even more incredible—the view from
                                                                                                                                                                    the island’s pebble beach, the scent of the sea breeze, and the
                                                                                                                                                                    gentle waves crashing into white foam made the whole journey
                                                                                                                                                                    worthwhile. Yokjido is famous for being the first place in Korea
                                                                                                                                                                    to successfully farm mackerel. As city dwellers unfamiliar with
                                                                                                                                                                    raw mackerel, we were delighted by the fresh seafood—mackerel
                                                                                                                                                                    sashimi, goose barnacles, and sea pineapples—served at a
                                                                                                                                                                    beachside food stall.

                                                                                                                                                                    One of our group’s goals was to go fishing. Night fishing by the
                                                                                                                                                                    sea, unlike the Han River or inland fishing spots, became a true
                                                                                                                                                                    highlight. The local tackle shop provided affordable gear and even
                                                                                                                                                                    fishing tips, making it easy and fun to dive into the experience.

      Vol.02  Vol.                                                                                                                                                  On our second day, we explored the island by rental car. Though

                                                                                                                                                                    mountainous, the uphill drives revealed spectacular panoramic
                                                                                                                                                                    views of the South Sea. One especially striking spot was the
                                                                                                                                                                    suspension bridge—known for the waves crashing into the gorge
                                                                                                                                                                    below, resembling a whale spouting water, earning it the nickname
                                                                                                                                                                    “Whale’s Fountain.” We took jump shots and reels, capturing
                                                                                                                                                                    memories in this surreal location.

                                                                                                                                                                    I also want to highlight another of Yokjido’s specialties—sweet
                                                                                                                                                                    potatoes. If someone asked what best represents Yokjido, I’d say
                                                                                                                                                                    mackerel and sweet potatoes, hands down. The local sweet potato
                                                                                                                                                                    makgeolli was delicious, and the vast sweet potato fields we
                                                                                                                                                                    passed on our drive were an impressive sight. That night, we went
                                                                                                                                                                    “star hunting.” While rarely mentioned in travel guides, Yokjido’s
                                                                                                                                                                    night sky is a hidden gem. On a clear day, you can see countless

                                                                                                                                                                    stars, the Milky Way, and even shooting stars. I believe stargazing
                                                                                                                                                                    should definitely be part of any future Yokjido travel plans.
