Islands of Korea, Islands of the World Islands of Korea, Islands of the World Story 2. A City Dweller’s Exploration of Yokjido ISLAND Scene ISLAND Scene
Before arriving, I assumed Yokjido was just another of the many
islands dotting the South Sea. But once there, I was stunned by its
breathtaking landscapes, vibrant local food, and countless things
to see. The ferry ride from Samdeok Port built anticipation as the
shimmering ocean and scattered islands unfolded around us.
What awaited us onshore was even more incredible—the view from
the island’s pebble beach, the scent of the sea breeze, and the
gentle waves crashing into white foam made the whole journey
worthwhile. Yokjido is famous for being the first place in Korea
to successfully farm mackerel. As city dwellers unfamiliar with
raw mackerel, we were delighted by the fresh seafood—mackerel
sashimi, goose barnacles, and sea pineapples—served at a
beachside food stall.
One of our group’s goals was to go fishing. Night fishing by the
sea, unlike the Han River or inland fishing spots, became a true
highlight. The local tackle shop provided affordable gear and even
fishing tips, making it easy and fun to dive into the experience.

Vol.02 Vol. On our second day, we explored the island by rental car. Though
mountainous, the uphill drives revealed spectacular panoramic
views of the South Sea. One especially striking spot was the
suspension bridge—known for the waves crashing into the gorge
below, resembling a whale spouting water, earning it the nickname
“Whale’s Fountain.” We took jump shots and reels, capturing
memories in this surreal location.
I also want to highlight another of Yokjido’s specialties—sweet
potatoes. If someone asked what best represents Yokjido, I’d say
mackerel and sweet potatoes, hands down. The local sweet potato
makgeolli was delicious, and the vast sweet potato fields we
passed on our drive were an impressive sight. That night, we went
“star hunting.” While rarely mentioned in travel guides, Yokjido’s
night sky is a hidden gem. On a clear day, you can see countless
Yokjido sea
stars, the Milky Way, and even shooting stars. I believe stargazing
should definitely be part of any future Yokjido travel plans.
