is a public interest foundation in Japan with functions

Since its establishment in 1966, the Center has focused on

exchange with the Center, marking it as the Institute’s first

KIDI’s First Step in
International Exchange
Inviting the Center for Research and
Promotion of Japanese Islands
to the 3rd Island Day Event
In August 2022, the Korea Island Development Institute (KIDI) invited representatives
from the Center for Research and Promotion of Japanese Islands to the 3rd Island Day
Week, laying the foundation for its first international exchange initiative.
Tsuyoshi Miki, Director of Research, and Naoki Saeki, Chief Researcher at the Center,
visited Gunsan—host city of the event—and participated in a range of activities. These
included a keynote presentation at the 2nd Korea Island Forum International Conference,
held under the theme “Sustainable Development Strategies in the Era of Regional
Extinction,” as well as attendance at the KIDI Academy lecture for the Youth Advisory
Group and a resident-led best practices showcase for island development. They also
visited promotional booths celebrating Island Day.
This marked the very first official exchange between the two organizations. A bilateral
meeting was held to introduce each institution and to discuss the direction of future
cooperation.
