Unlike cities where life rushes by, time moves slowly on islands. Here, the sound of waves
and the wind serve as the clock, while the setting sun marks the end of the day. The sea
breeze lingers in the centuries-old pine trees, and the quiet waves still echo with the songs

of fishermen.
Stone paths, worn smooth by generations of footsteps, hold countless stories. Named
rocks and trees, weathered by storms, quietly reveal the passage of time. The time on
islands—shaped by both nature and people—moves slowly, yet within that slowness, we
often rediscover the true essence of life.
Vol.03 Islands are more than just beautiful landscapes. Their histories, traditions, and unique
cultures offer glimpses into the wisdom and elegance of our ancestors. They serve as
precious spaces that connect the past with the future.
To celebrate these qualities and share them with a wider audience, the Korea Island
Development Institute (KIDI) launched the “Island of the Month” project.
Initiated at the time of KIDI’s founding, Island of the Month highlights the sustainability and August: Oeyeondo, Boryeong-si September: Gapado, Seogwipo-si October: Gyodongdo, Ganghwa-gun
cultural richness of island regions. Each month, a new island is selected and promoted,
with the goal of elevating public awareness of the island’s heritage and distinct identity.
Through this initiative, KIDI aims to showcase the humanistic and cultural value of
islands—especially in a time when many face demographic decline and cultural erosion.
The slogan “Doran Doran” is a Korean wordplay combining “do (島)” meaning “island” and
the onomatopoeic expression for warm conversation (doran doran), capturing the project’s
intention to share island stories in a familiar and heartfelt way.
