National Literacy
Crusade
This is a collection of many unique documents
created in the process of Nicaragua’s major literacy
campaign that started in 1980. Volunteers moved to
rural areas and taught reading and writing to more
than half of the Nicaraguan population, who were
illiterate and lived in poverty. The campaign was the
most important educational and cultural achievement
in the history of Nicaragua.
The collection includes many reference materials and
documents, including letters, interviews, participant
testimonies, journal entries, maps, cassette tapes,
and books related to literacy campaigns, as well as
· ICDH textbooks in Spanish, Creole English, Miskito language,
and Sumu language (spoken by ethnic minorities in
From. Nicaragua and the Caribbean coasts).
