Life Below Water
The ocean covers around 70% of the Earth's surface and is the dominant
source of all water supplies. Home to a diverse range of ocean ecosystems
and sustaining many organisms' livelihoods, the need to emphasize its
importance is out of bounds. Like many other environmental spheres, the
oceans are exposed to pollution, global warming, and acidification threats.
The threats damage marine ecosystems and the population that depends
on them, creating a vicious global cycle to nature and human society.
International efforts proved that when with time and effort, specific issues
are solvable. Strengthening protection measures and monitoring showed
successful figures in bringing back biological balance and restoring
marine biodiversity. Regulations and legal implementations showed
improvement in controlling illegal, overfishing activities.
Enhancement of the ocean and its marine ecosystem is possible with
further action. Under the fundamental goal to manage, restore and
strengthen the sea, the sustainable goals aim to expand its realm by
providing supportable ocean industry management to developing states
such as the Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the most exposed to
the ocean's change. Research & development on marine technology and
science are additional goals to solve current issues better, assisting those
of SIDS.
Without global cooperation, the ocean we know might last only in
documents and memories. Hoping to be a future never to encounter, it
would be our actions that would keep our oceans blue and clear.
