Small Lights in Island Villages
The dazzling neon signs of a bustling city. The quiet, sparkling glow
of light in an island village. Which is more beautiful?
Everyone may define beauty differently, but one thing is certain: In a
city, flipping a switch doesn’t change the world around you. But on an
island, a single light can transform everything. One small beam can
brighten an entire village—or leave it in darkness.
To help build a safer and brighter island, the Korea Island
Development Institute (KIDI) brought the gift of light to island resi-
dents. This was part of a joint social contribution initiative with the
Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority (KOMSA) and Korea
Electric Power Industrial Development (KEPID).
The project took place on Wonsando Island in Boryeong, Chungche-
ongnam-do—the host site of the 5th Island Day, lending the effort
even more meaning.
Before beginning electrical work, participants receive a safety briefing and chant slogans for
